Hough's printing chronograph. This device was invented by US astronomer George Washington Hough (1836-1909). It is designed to print astronomical observations, with the advance of the paper controlled by the weight and oscillations of the pendulums (lower centre). Hough was director of the Dudley Observatory, Albany, New York, USA, from 1862 to 1874. An article describing his printing chronograph was published in 1872, with the invention dating to around 1871.
