Just as the Chicago fire of 1871 is said to havebeen brought about mainly by the prevalence of agale, so the San Francisco fire is popularly declaredto have resulted from the breaking of the watermains. But in the light of post-fire investigationsit seems more and more plain that this was notreally the main factor in the early spread of theconflagration. Probably no single agent had so much to dowith making this the greatest conflagration ofmodern times as did the breaking out of so manysimultaneous fires, distant from each other, in thefirst moments following the earthquake.
