Previous to the advent of General Breckinridge, who wastouring the island on an inspection trip, the colonel re-ceived a list of questions regarding the condition of hiscommand, even to the most minute detail, and a list ofthirty-six questions was placed in the hands of each com-pany commander, and having the same purport. It was asystem that should have been established months beforein the camps back in the States, and might have been themeans of saving a great deal of suffering among the troops,but although it was well enough to adopt the plan eventardily, yet it came at such a late day in the career of the 390.
