Death of Simon de Montfort, Battle of Evesham, Worcestershire, 1265 (1864). Simon de Montfort (1208-1265), 6th Earl of Leicester, was the leader of the English barons in their power struggle with King Henry III. Henry revoked his assent to the Provisions of Oxford in 1261, which led to a revolt by the barons, led by de Montfort, breaking out in 1263. The ensuing conflict, known as the Second Barons' War, ended at Evesham in 1265, when de Montfort was defeated by a royalist army commanded by the king's son, Prince Edward, and killed.
