Models of fullerenes. View of various molecular models of fullerenes, also known as 'buckyballs'. The models show the near-spherical, icosahedral nature of this group of carbon molecules. Each contains twelve pentagonal rings of carbon atoms spaced evenly among a number of hexagonal rings of atoms. The number of hexagons is determined by the number of atoms. The red and white model at top centre is C60, the first of the fullerenes to be described. At centre is a sample of shungite, a 600 million year old sedimentary rock in which natural fullerenes have been discovered. Photographed at Arizona State University, USA.
