Bonaparte foresawthat, if he could withdraw with hini some of Frances best offi-cers, the Directory might soon find itself so embarrassed thathe could return as a national savior. And even so it fell out. The French fleetleft Toulon May 19,1798. It was so for-tunate as to escapethe English squad-ron under Nelson,which sailed by itin the night. Bona-parte arrived at Alex-andria July I, andeasily defeated theTurkish troops inthe famous battle ofthe Pyramids, nearCairo. MeanwhileNelson, who did not. Egyptian Campaign know the destination of the enemys fleet, had returned from theSyrian coast, where he had looked for the French in vain. He dis-covered Bonapartes ships in the harbor of Alexandria and an-nihilated them in the first battle of the Nile (August i, 1798).The French troops were now completely cut off from Porte (that is, the Turkish government) declared waragainst France, and Bonaparte resolved to attack Turkey by accordingly marched into Syria in the spring of 1799, but wasrepulsed at Acre, where the Turkish forces were aided by theEnglish fleet.
