Towards the end of the18th and in the beginning of the 19th century several sealers residedon them for longer or shorter periods. In 1816 the islands weretaken possession of by Great Britain. In 1817 the garrison waswithdrawn, but Corporal William Glass, his wife and family, andtwo men were allowed to remain. The settlement has always been ou the flat stretchof land on the north-west of Tristan, and is called Edinburgh. TwoGermans lived for several years on Inaccessible Island, but withthis exception there have been no settlements either ou this or onNightingale Island. TRITON. The genus Triton was constituted by Lau-renti, in his Synopsis Reptilium, and tLe name was adoptedby nearly all writers on A mphibia. In Brit. llus. Cat. :Batrachia Gradientia, by G. A.
