The bonynature of the carapace isseen when the plates areremoved, or if its innersurface is viewed (). It is seen to con-sist largely of wide ribs(how many ?) much flat-tened and grown togetherat their edges. The ribsare seen to be rigidly at-tached to the rear projections ofthe vertebrae are flattenedinto a series of bony plateswhich take the place ofthe sharp ridge foundalong the backs of most vertebrates.
