The principal cause no doubt of the decreased efficiencyof the finer coal is the loss due to the unburned coal beingthrown out of the stack. The amount of this loss of coursedepends upon the rate of firing and the relative fineness ofthe coal. The diagram shows only the relation between the stack-losses and the rate of firing. The stack losses, which run as high as 15 to 20% of thecoal fired, have no other relation to the method of firing 39.
