In the movement to check the progress of General Lee in Mary-land, the regiment was in the reserve when Slocums divisiondrove the enemy from Cramptons Gap, on the 14th. They werepresent at the battle of Antietam, Franklins corps reinforcingGenerals Hooker and Sumner. Smiths division being in supportof artillery, the regiment lay on the ground nearly all day, underthe terrible fire of the enemy, with little loss. Colonel Cobb wasin command of the brigade. After a fruitless attempt to interceptStewarts cavalry, on his celebrated raid around McClellans army,they rejoined the army at Falmouth, and on the 12th, 13th, 14thand 15th of December, participated in the battle of Fredericksburg,though not much exposed.
