Ceres. Computer artwork, based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images, of the dwarf planet Ceres (1 Ceres) with the Sun in the distance. Ceres has a diameter of 950 kilometres. This makes it the largest object in the asteroid belt and the smallest identified dwarf planet in the solar system. A dwarf planet is an object large enough to be spherical due to its gravity but which doesn't dominate its orbit around the Sun. Ceres is one of many objects in the asteroid belt. The surface of Ceres is thought to consist of a mixture of water ice, and various hydrated minerals like carbonates and clays.
