Alder tree growing on the bank of the River Wey, in Thundry Meadows, Elstead, Surrey, England. River level high after heavy rain.

Alder tree growing on the bank of the River Wey, as it runs through water meadows to the north-east of the village of Elstead, Surrey. The river frequently floods these low lying fields. Alder trees are very tolerant of wet conditions and are frequently found growing on the edge of rivers where and their roots help bind the soil and stabilise the bank helping to prevent erosion. This photo was taken when the water level was high and close to overflowing the river banks and flooding the adjoining meadows.
