Ernst Otto Beckmann (1853-1923), German chemist. Beckmann initially studied as a pharmacist, but by the 1880s was working on chemical problems. He discovered an organic chemistry reaction now known as the Beckmann rearrangement. Beckmann also worked on physical chemistry, and in 1905 developed a differential thermometer now called the Beckmann thermometer. During his career he worked mostly at the university at Leipzig, moving to Berlin in 1912 to work at the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry. He retired in 1921. Photographed by Max Henry Hubacher (1900-1989).
