Graus, Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: allegorical painting representing the Arts on the facade of Casa Barón or Baron’s House, a grand ‘palace-house’ on the main square, Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España of Graus. The Baron’s House is one of the buildings that make up the arcaded main square of Graus. It is of medieval origin with extensive Baroque additions. The latest changes were made by the barón de Sanrromán de Abella de Conca (Baron of Sanrromán de Abella de Conca) in the second half of the 1700s. He is reported to have had the facade decorated with allegorical paintings of Arts and Sciences in bright colours, together with boxed pilasters, entablatures and floral decoration, to please his wife who was of Andalusian origin. Although the paintings and decoration have been repainted, they have retained their Baroque appearance. Graus is a village in the Spanish Pyrenees in one of the areas where the Aragonese language is still spoken. It is the administrative capital of Ribagorza county. In 1063, El Cid took part in the Battle of Graus at which the King of Aragon was killed.
