When so largeas to occupy the greater part of the abdomen, the shape of thecyst or cjsts is determined necessarily by that of the abdominalwalls. The consistence and thickness of the tvalls of the cysts are vari-ous. The wall is sometimes very thin, especially in the case ofsingle cysts, or where the tumor is mainly made up of one largecyst: the free surface of most cysts is thin. But the cyst wallshave often very considerable thickness, and they are liable to be Fig. 104.*. thickened by deposit from within, this deposit being the result ofinflammation or coagulation of eifused blood, or deposition of fattymatter in the shape of cholesterine, or from presence of growthsto be presently described. In the case of simple cysts, the wallsare generally divisible into three layers. The outer is the peri-toneal covering, which is thin and translucent. The middle coatis of varying thickness, according to the age of the cyst, and othercircumstances; it is generally a firm, fibrous layer, giving strengthand consistence to the cyst. The middle coat contains the blood-vessels of the cyst, which are often very numerous, and may beas large as a small quill. Fatal hemorrhage may occur in theoperation of paracentesis, fi-om wounding these vessels. The in-ternal coat is a layer of cells, generally spheroidal, sometimes * Pig 104, from Cruveilhier and Farre, is a good representat
