The city of Venice, capital of the Veneto region of Italy, is made up of many small islands which lie in the Venetian Lagoon at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea. Venice and its lagoon were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The 15th century Renaissance Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in the Cannaregio district is a masterpiece in marble by Pietro Lombardo.
