Allosaurus and Diplodocus dinosaurs. Computer artwork of an Allosaurus dinosaur (lower left) approaching a solitary, young Diplodocus. Diplodocus was a giant herbivorous dinosaur that could reach a length of up to 30 metres. It is thought that it lived in herds for protection against predators. If an individual became separated from the herd, especially if it was young, it was at risk of attack from large carnivores such as Allosaurus. These dinosaurs inhabited what is now North America in the late Jurassic period, between 155 and 145 million years ago.
