The boom-gate barriers being raised at the level crossing near the village of Montuolo in Tuscany after a train had gone through. This crossing is located where the Via Pisana intersects with the railway line between Lucca and Pisa. The level crossings operated by Trenitalia (Ferrovie Dello Stato Italiane) are automated with active protection features. They have automatic warning devices such as flashing lights, warning tones and boom gates. Modern radar sensor systems can detect if crossings are free of obstruction as trains approach and initiate appropriate action. Automated systems have improved safety and reduced the number of collisions. In Italy level crossings are called “Passagi a Livelloâ€\x9D, often abbreviated to “P/Lâ€\x9D on vertical and horizontal road signage.
