Ptolemaic Egyptian statue of Ptolemy 1st Soter, 4th quarter 4th cent BC, marble. Louvre Museum Ma 849 or MR457. Portrait of Ptolemy I Soter, frontal, headband. The sovereign, general of Alexander the Great, founder of the Greek dynasty of the Lagides, ruled Egypt from 306-282 BC. This sculpted portrait could be identified by comparison with coins minted at its effergy. The tip of the nose, the skull cap with the royal headband, the neck and bust are modern restorations of the French sculptor of the eighteenth century, Augustin Pajou. The most famous ptolomaic queen of Egypt was Cleopatra. Height: 58 cm; Width: 37 cm; Depth: 37 cm. Sully room 339.
