They trull chiefly in thepatoo patoo, which is fattened to their wrifts bymeans of a ftrong ftrap, that it may not bewrenched out of their hand. Thefe are wornin the girdles of people of a fuperior rank, asa military ornament. They have a kind offtaff of diftinclion, which is carried by the prin-cipal warriors. It is formed of a whales rib,is quite white, and adorned with carvings, fea-thers, and the hair of their dogs ; and theyfometimcs carried a flick fix feet long, inlaidwith fliells, and otherwife adorned like the mi-litary flafF. This honourable mark of diftinc-tion was commonly borne by the old men. When they came to attack the Englifh, therewas ufually one or more thus diftinguifhed ineach canoe.
