Only three and ahalf millions of this was given out instrike pay, the balance being devoted tothe liquidation of death and disabilityclaims, etc. It is also to be remembered that thesefigures refer to money going through theordinary channels, and in addition manythousands of dollars are being grantedfor special cases, of which no account istaken in the compilation of official fig-ures.—T07ont
