Western Sandpiper Calidris mauri (Cabanis) Status: The Western Sandpiper is a common transient through the central part of the state but uncommon elsewhere. It has been re- corded in early winter. Period of Occurrence: This sandpiper arrives around 10 April and departs 6 June, with the earliest spring arrival on 12 March. The fall migration is from 18 July through 24 Sep- tember; the latest fall record is 25 October. It is casual in early winter, with recorded dates of 17-27 December. Habits and Habitat: The Western Sandpiper is commonly found as- sociating with other "peeps" in the central Kansas marshes. It feeds in large mixed flocks on the mudflats, where it uses its drooped bill to probe for invertebrates. It breeds in the tundra of Alaska and com- monly winters along the far southern coasts of North America and south into South America. Field Marks: This species closely resembles both the Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers. It can be separated from the Least.
