STS-45 launch: Space Shuttle Atlantis thunders into the air at the start of Mission STS-45 on 24 March 1992. STS-45 carried the ATLAS-1 payload in its cargo bay, intended to conduct 13 experiments in atmospheric chemistry, astrophysics and UV astronomy. Atlantis returned safely to Earth on 2 April 1992.
