Human spermatid. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a human testis (testicle), showing a single round spermatid. Spermatids mature into spermatozoa (sperm cells). One pole of the nucleus is covered with the developing acrosome, a cap-like membranous organelle, within which are enzymes required for penetration of the egg during fertilization. Round spermatids transform by the process of spermiogenesis into elongated spermatids by condensation/reshaping of the nucleus (dark, centre), loss of most cytoplasm and development of a tail/flagellum. Magnification: x6,000, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
