Moon and Earth. Artwork of part of Earth (left) with a crescent Moon. The Sun is seen at centre. The Moon orbits the Earth every days, at an average distance of 384,400 kilometres. Its diameter is 3476 kilometres. The origin of the Moon is uncertain. It may have formed from material separated from Earth, or from debris that resulted from the collision of a large body with Earth. It does not possess an atmosphere, and the surface temperature ranges from -180 degrees Celsius to 110 degrees Celsius.
