A cannula (pink), a hollow blunt tube, is being inserted into the wrist. A tube, which will carry the drug, will be put in the cannula. The boy has already been made unconscious by the administration of an anaesthetic gas. Anaesthetics induce unconsciousness and so prevent the patient feeling any pain or discomfort during an operation.
