Thylacosmilus sabre-toothed cat. Artwork showing the skull and muscle anatomy of the head and neck of a Thylacosmilus atrox sabre-toothed cat. The sabre-toothed cats were prehistoric predatory mammals that had long, curved canine teeth. They existed between 42 million and 7 million years ago. Thylacosmilus atrox was found in South America during the Miocene and Pliocene, between 10 million and 3 million years ago.
