Illustration and photo-reconstruction of a scimitar cat (Homotherium serum) found in North America from the late Pliocene until the late Pleistocene. Remains have been found at various sites between Alaska and Texas. The scimitar cat is about the size of a lion, but lighter in body. H. serum measured about metres in length, 110 centimetres in height and weighed about 230 kilograms. Its stance at rest may have been slightly hyena-like with sloping hindquarters. It's thought the top speed of the scimitar cat would have been about 60 kilometers per hour.
