Alaska, US: THE PHOTOGRAPHER who took these close-up shots of grizzlies admits to being armed ?just in case? but has only ever had to fire his weapon into the air after being charged by an angry bear subject. One image shows a bear up close with a salmon in its mouth and another shot shows the beast ready to eat, while looking straight into the camera. These images were taken by photographer Ken Baldwin in South West Alaska, USA, who carries a Glock 20 with 10mm ammo from Buffalo Bore. Using his Nikon D500 camera, Ken travels the tundra of West Alaska to photograph the brown bears. Because of the danger a brown bear can pose, Ken goes prepared with a firearm, mainly for the purpose of firing warning shots. As a guide, he is also charged with protecting those who accompany him and must be prepared for anything. ?I?ve been charged by a bear twice,? said Ken. ?It goes from zero to one hundred real quick. It?s quiet and peaceful, nothing much happening, then you hear some branches breaking, heavy and loud breathing, a grunt or growl. Your body lights up. A big head appears out of the brush along the river. ?You are one hundred percent dialled in and alert. Everything, all your senses are on high and man you feel alive. I?m not afraid, but I am fully aware and once did I shoot my firearm. I shot my gun into the air to scare the bear. I had enough time to give a warning shot. ?I wear a firearm on my chest, so I have fast access to it. When I?m photographing, I have to make a decision on when to switch from holding my camera to holding my gun and I?m always aware of that. I need to anticipate how the bear is going to move and where he is going to move to. ?Also, while photographing I can?t forget about my surroundings and what might be happening behind us or to the side. I?ve had bears show up behind where we are positioned while taking photos of a bear in front of Large male brown bears can stand ove
