The first one of interest to us is AndreasAmati, who was born in 1520 and who died in may have been a pupil of Gasparo di Salo and thenagain he may not. At any rate, his model differsvery much from Gasparos and marks a great advance,although it still retains the stiff, upright Bresciansound-hole. Andreas Amati chose a smaller modelwith belly and back very high. His outline wasvery graceful; his scroll beautifully cut; his varnishof an amber color;
