The great German cannon easily destroyed theAntwerp fortifications, w^hich w^ere inadequatelyhianned by one Belgian division and a body of Brit-ish marines. The city was evacuated Oct. 5, mostof the defenders escaping westward, though somecrossed the border into Holland and were interned.
