This Broad -bodied chaser dragonfly (Libellula depressa) is a common dragonfly in the British Isles. It can be found also in much of Europe and into Central Asia and the Middle East. The adults are migratory. The females and immature adults have beautiful metallic golden brown abdomens. Mature males have a duller pale blue abdomen. They are territorial and have a favourite perch from which they hunt many small insects. They are found around the still water of ponds and lakes, often visiting garden ponds, being the first to colonise new locations.
