Low-angle view of Cortile del Podestà courtyard of Palazzo Pubblico city hall, with the Torre del Mangia tower, Unesco , Siena, Tuscany, Italy

The Palazzo Pubblico of Siena (also called Palazzo Comunale) was built between 1297 and 1310 by the Government of the Nine of the Republic of Siena, as its seat. This function is also reflected today, as the seat of the municipal administration, as well as the Civic Museum. It stands on the Piazza del Campo and is flanked by the slender Torre del Mangia. Inside it preserves masterpieces from the golden age of Sienese art. The Courtyard of the Podestà, completed in 1325 and restored at the beginning of the twentieth century , is entirely in terracotta, porched on four sides, with large three-light windows. In a corner are the remains of the Statue of Mangia, the ancient guardian and bell ringer from which the tower takes its name.
