Even one of thelast rails laid in place was cut and batteredso badly that it was removed and anothersubstituted. Weeks after the event wepassed the place again, and found an enthu-siastic person cutFing a piece out of thelast tie laid. He was proud of his treasure— that little chip of pine—for it was a jjieceof the last tie.
