Catalan Festival in Manchester

A scene from the 'Catalan Cultural Festival' held in Manchester in 2003. The 'Ball de Bastonets' is a traditional Catalan dance (though similar dances appear in other parts of Europe) performed with short sticks or 'Bastons'. This is the oldest (12th Century) Catalan dance still practiced today, and though its origins and meanings are not absolutely clear, there are definite links to Moorish sword dancing. Bastonets is traditionally a 'men-only' activity, though in recent years the rules have been relaxed.
