Spain: The 13th century Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) situated on the east bank of the Guadalquivir River, Seville. The first and main level of the dodecagonal watchtower was built by Abu I-Ula during the Almohad Caliphate (1121 - 1269) in order to control access to the city of Seville. The second, much smaller level, was built in the 14th century by Peter of Castile (1334 - 1369). The tower served as a prison during the Middle Ages.
