Ely, hasbeen for many years a merchant in the was a clerk and member of the firm of Thorne,Watson, Corse & Co. In 1852 he left that firm anddid a leather business alone until 1876, when hediscontinued and sold much of his leather at goodprices in the autumn of that year. His political recordwas good. He diminished the net debt of the cityand also the expenditures each of the two years othis term. No other mayor shows such a married 700 couples during his two years 01office. Both these brothers are living and theyhave always stood high
