MentlOB Ths B«t1»w when yon writs. large, well colored flowers in numbers. The history of those plants as told by Mr. Jamison is extremely interesting. It seems that early in October the house, which is 70x600 feet, had a little aphis, commonly known as green fly, here and there. A light fumigation with liquid nicotine on the pipes was planned. A government expert, however, advised the use of hydrocyanic gas as more thorough and less expensive. Mr. Jami- son finaUy agreed to this on the govern- ment expert's assurance that in his hands it was perfectly safe. The house was gassed late in the afternoon Octo- ber 7 and allowed to remain closed all night. The next morning the plants ap- peared badly burned. The foliage was scorched down to the ground and the young growths dropped off. The lower eyes on many of the plants swelled and started to grow soon after. It is simply wonderful that today many of these plants show no signs of in- jury. Some plants of the other varie- ties died and some are stunted. Mr. Jamison thinks that gassing should never be done with plants in active growth. If it is to be done at all, the proper time is when the houses are cut back and cleaned. In defense of the use of hydrocyanic gas it is said that the government expert may have miscalcu- lated the cubic feet of air space in the house and so he may have given too strong a dose. It is further stated that it would have been better to open the house one hour after gassing it rather than to allow it to remain closed all night. Various Notes.
