MNaughten, the British Envoy at the Court of Shah Soojah,invited him to a conference ; he went accompanied by four officers and asmall escort, when the treacherous Afghan, after abusing the BritishAmbassador, drew a pistol and shot him dead on the spot. CaptainTrevor, of the 3d Bengal Cavalry, on rushing to his assistance, was cutdown ; three other officers were made prisoners, and the mutilated bodyof the Ambassador was then barbarously paraded through the town. Itwas also stated that some severe fighting had taken place, but under thegreatest disadvantage to the British and nativ^e troops, and that the armyin Cabul had been almost literally annihilated.
