ECONOMY IN FUEL.* IN ordinary coal when heat is apphed achange immediately begins : the coalsoftens and swells, and a large quantity of gasis set free. This gas, consisting of carburettedhydrogen and bicarburetted hydrogen, whenbrought in contact with a sufficient quantity ofthe gas called oxygen at a certain temperature, effects a chemical combination with it, and inthis process the heat we require is brought forth. But the coal contains another combustible, called carbon, which also combines with oxygen, forming carbonic acid and carbonic oxide, and inthat process also gives off the heat required. Sothat combustion, or burning, means just thechemical union or joining of certain substancesin certain proportions, which substances in thisprocess of union give off the latent heat con-tained in them, and required for our purposes. When we require a good fire it is not o
