The naviga-tion of the coast is very dangerous ; the Roads, in whichare two floating lighthouses, are frequently resorted toby the North Sea fleet, and merchant-vessels are con-stantly repairing to them for shelter. The market is onWednesday and Saturday ; fairs are held on the Mondayand Tuesday at Shrovetide, and on the Friday and Sa-turday in Easter-week. The present corn-exchange wasopened in 1842, the fish-market in Oct. 1844. YA R M YARM Prior to the reign of King John, the town was go-verned by a provost appointed by the crown ; but acharter of incorporation granted by that monarch inthe ninth year of his reign, empowered the burgesses tochoose their own magistrates, called bailiffs, who wereauthorized to hold a court of hustings, now called the Corporation Obverse. Reverse. Burgh court. The privileges were extended by suc-ceeding sovereigns. Edward II. granted tronage to theburgesses, and exemption from serving on any assizes,juries, or inquisitions, out of the borough ; and thecharter of Elizabeth conferred power to hold an admi-ralty court weekly, with liberty to try all maritimecauses, except piracy. The corporation at present con-sists of a mayor, high steward, recorder, twelve alder-men, and thirty-six councillors, assisted by a town-clerk, water-bailiff, gaoler, three sergeants-at-mace, andother officers, appointed under the act 5th
