XLVII The Pacific salmon fry placed in the ponds for experimental purposesweighed 1 pound 10 ounces to the thousand on July 1. These wereconfined in n pond about 8,000 square feet in area. In January, 1898,they weighed 41 to the pound, and in June the average weight hadincreased to V2 to the pound. Great dissimilarity was noticed in thecolor and shape of .lake-trout eggs taken from different waters. Forexample, the eggs of the lake trout taken at Willoughby Lake closelyresemble those of the landlocked salmon, and aie much larger thanthose from Caspian Lake, 600 of the Willoughby Lake eggs equaling 4fluid ounces, while it required 800 from C-^spian Lake to fill the samemeasure. It was also noticed that the fry hatched from the CaspianLake eggs were much smaller and more active. During April, as the troughs in the hatchery were much crowded,some
