Human brain in the skull, computer artwork. The largest part of the brain is the cerebrum (upper centre), which controls conscious thoughts and emotions. The cerebellum (tightly folded at centre left) controls posture and movement and plays a role in the processing of sensory perception. The brainstem (extending down from the brain) connects the brain to the spinal cord (not seen), and through that to the rest of the body. As well as relaying information from the body, it controls unconscious actions such as heart rate and breathing rate, and also controls sensitivity to pain.
