Ovarian follicle. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary, showing an intermediary follicle. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). Intermediary (between primordial and primary) follicles are an early stage of follicular development, part of a process called folliculogenesis that parallels the development of the female sex cells, resulting in ovulation and the release of an ovum from the mature follicle. Magnification: x1150 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
