On the public schools, ofwhich Oakland is justly very proud, nearly16,000 are monthly expended, and nearly aquarter of a million dollars value in property isowned by the department. The State Univer-sity is within the city limits. Its site, which hasbeen named Berkley, is on the northern borderof the city and has a direct ferry to San Fran-cisco, and many families are planting themselvesthere, attracted by its natural beauty and the ed-ucational and social advantages which clusteraround it. The University is open to studentsof both sexes, and tuition is free. The numberof students exceeds 200. By special law, the 260 TME ^m€IFI€ sale of intoxicating liquors isforbidden, within two miles ofthis University. There are 20 churches inOakland, of which 16 ownhouses of worship. Some ofthem are elegant and costly;the First Presbyterian Churchhas recently dedicated a newchurch building which costthem over $60,000. Sevennewspapers are published,three daily, the restweekly. Ihe rides in and aroundOakland, for variety of at-tractive features, are rarelyequaled. Many come overfrom San Francisco, in themorning, expressly to enjoythis pleasure. Lake Meriitt,a beautiful sheet of water,Tubbs Hotel and the GrandCentral Hotel, both spaciousand admirably kept, areamong the attractions whichnone fail to visit, and withwhich thousands have bright/-t and happy memories associa-ted.
