The city of Evansville in soxUhwestern Indiana is becom-ing an interurban center of considerable importance. At thepresent time three interurban lines have their terminals inthis city, including the Evansville Princeton & Vincennes In-terurban Railroad, which was recently incorporated and pur-chased the Evansville & Princeton Traction Company, theEvansville Suburban & Newburgh Railway, which operatesbetween Evansville and Boonville and Evansville and New-burgh, and the Evansville & Mt. Vernon Electric Railway. Ofthese three lines the latter has most recently been put in ac-tive operation. This railway is 20 miles long and connects. Evansville & Mt. Vernon Interurban—Map of Route and Connec-tions. Evansville with Mt. Vernon, passing through a prosperous andwell-settled farming district. Construction work was started in August, 1905, and thefirst car operated on June 18, 1906. For 16 miles betweenthe terminal cities the company operates over a private rightof way from 33 to 60 feet wide. In Mt. Vernon the carstraverse the public streets for a distance of one mile and inEvansville the interurban company has an agreement withthe Evansville Electric Railway Company by which the carsare operated over the tracks of the city line for three miles. The roadbed of that portion of the line outside the citiesis of standard construction and a maximum grade of two percent is maintained. The right of way extends through a com-paratively level section and no difficult engineering featureswere encountered. For a considerable portion of its lengththe electric line parallels the steam road of the Louisville &Nashville Rai
