There is one motive in particular which seems tohave been dear to the humanity of the time, and to have expressedits deepest preoccupations; this was the Dance of Death, livingbeings conducted to the grave by grinning skeletons. It appearedfirst, no doubt, in Paris, in 1424, in the charnel-house of theChurch of the Holy Innocents, and thence it spread throughoutFrance; we find scattered traces of it now at Kermaria, in Brit-tany, where gambollingskeletons are shown tor-menting monks; at LaChaise-Dieu, wherefigures outlined in blackshow a white silhouetteagainst a background ofred ochre (Fig. 255); inthe cloister of the AilrcSaint-Maclou (Rouen),this Dance of Death iscarved in wood and isslowlv crumbling away.
