The city of Vicksburg was founded in 1819 by Methodist Minister Newit Vick. Founded along the Mississippi River Vicksburg soon became a major trading center. During the Civil War the city suffered during a 47 day siege by the Union Army, with the surrender on July 4th, 1863.
