Before proceeding further with our story, let us survey the armymovements since we left the Army of the Potomac at Harrisons Landing on the James river inthe early days of July. Whilethis army was on the Peninsula,three other commands had beenformed: (1) McDowells, atFredericksburg; (2) Banks, inthe Shenandoah Valley, and (3)Fremonts, in West were united under GeneralPope, who issued a bombasticaddress, the pungency of whichwas evidently aimed at McClellanand his army.
