Josiah, the father of Benjamin, became a tenant of this build-ing it is thought about 1685, continuing to occupy it until 1712,and, as Benjamin was born on the (ith of January, 1 Tin;, and isupon the Old South church records as having received baptismthe same day, upon this is founded the claim of the old house asthe place of his nativity. Franklins own statement, to a person worthy of credit, wasthat he was born at the south-east corner of Union and Hanover ANTIQUE VIEWS OF. BOSTON. Streets, while other evidence goes to contradict it. That his earlyyouth was passed here is certain. The Hanover-Union Street building was quite small and of twostories, to which a third was added in latter times.
